Duraflame DFI-5010-01 Infrared Quartz Fireplace Stove Review

What is it about a real fire that makes it so easy to get lost in the majesty and wonder of that flickering flame? We don't know about you, but sometimes on a cold winter's night, we love to cozy up and enjoy the charm of each ember that escapes the logs and dissipates into the great unknown. In the age of natural gas heating systems, that pastime has given way to hypnosis by television and other screens for many. Well, not necessarily, for those who have a Duraflame DFI-5010-01 electric fireplace or a comparable product in their homes.

What Is the Duraflame DFI-5010-01?

  • Patent pending 3D flame effect technology features realistic flames that dance on and behind the logs, including five adjustable color, brightness, and speed settings

What is a Duraflame DFI-5010-01? Well, one way to describe this electric fireplace-style heating unit is that it's simply the best thing since they started putting wood stoves in the middle of log-cabin houses and schoolhouses. Imagine if you could enjoy many features of a fireplace without having to chop wood and cart it into the house, carrying who knows what bugs into your living room? What if you didn't have to scoop out all those ashes or even install a gas line? This product and others like it provide these benefits.

So, how can we capture that fireplace experience without the dangers and mess? That's where the Duraflame DFI-5010-01 comes in. We know that it sounds a little complicated, but stay with us, and make sure you get that model number: Duraflame DFI-5010-01. Now that we've got that straight, let's talk about this innovative fireplace a bit more, and then move on to compare it to some similar products for features, functionality, and overall value.

Product Specs

The Duraflame DFI-5010-01 is a fun, useful device featuring the ability to produce a dazzling display without emitting any heat. Alternatively, you can say, "I don't need the light show, I just want heat." There's a way to create either environment. The Duraflame DFI-5010-01 offers the fireplace effect you crave, but only the parts of that effect that you want, whether that is the heat, the light, or both. It does this without a real flame or gas consumption, using electricity and infrared technology.

Prices vary on this unit, but we found it available from Amazon and select other sellers for around $130.

EASE OF USE

The Duraflame DFI-5010-01 stove's controls are slightly awkward to work, with a limited selection of buttons to choose from but a large range of functionality. For instance, you have to hold down a button in order to turn some features off. There's also a timer. Once you have your unit up and running and spend a little time experimenting with it, however, you're good to go.

HEAT OUTPUT & DISTRIBUTION

We think the manufacturer's claim of sufficient heat for 1,000 square feet might be a little lofty, but this Duraflame unit comes pretty close. Most buyers will also have central heat that won't work as hard with this product in the room. We will add this caution: electric heat sources are generally costly to operate. Gas heat is much more efficient for an entire home or apartment.

DESIGN QUALITY

The fire this Duraflame stove presents appears less realistic from the side, looking almost like a projection on the various set pieces like the wood and the back of the stove. The beveled glass is a nice touch that accents the realism of the 3-dimensional fire illusion.

RELIABILITY & WARRANTY

The warranty lasts one year. According to our research, this is important coverage to have, as some units do fail within this period.

Pros

  • Heats mid-sized rooms well
  • Both heat and "fire" effects

Cons

  • Drives up your electric bill

Comfort Smart Jackson Infrared Electric Fireplace Stove Heater

In many respects and for many users, any electric fireplace is primarily a supplement to gas heat. Many offer pleasing visual effects as well, though, such as the realistic fireplace appearance of several products on our list. Our reviews of electric fireplaces and other products are totally objective, and this is why we will repeat our cautions about energy consumption and costs here, as we examine another popular option from a company called Comfort Smart Jackson. Overall, we found this unit acceptable, but we also discovered some concerns about it.

PRICE

$$$

This item is expensive for the category at around $230.

EASE OF USE

We rated this Comfort Smart Jackson heater 4 stars for usability because of the remote control functionality. It also has more buttons than the Duraflame DFI-5010-01, which we liked because it makes controlling the unit more straightforward. We recommend mounting the tiny remote controller on the back of another remote or in a designated spot so you don't lose it. Finally, we like that this unit stays cool to the touch, so it's less likely to ever burn someone accidentally.

HEAT OUTPUT & DISTRIBUTION

This product is billed to provide sufficient heat for 1,000 square feet of interior space.

DESIGN QUALITY

The fire effect created by this electric fireplace doesn't look as convincing as we expected for the price. Without that cosmetic benefit, this product may amount to a super-expensive, glorified space heater. In any event, we were decidedly unimpressed by the unattractive infrared heating element positioned at the top of this unit.

RELIABILITY & WARRANTY

It is unclear whether a warranty is offered on this product, but you should check with your online or in-person retailer regarding any applicable return policies.

Pros

  • Glowing wood effect cast from a real wood unit
  • Equipped with a timer for auto-shutoff

Cons

  • Far more expensive than gas heat

HomCom 16" 1500W Free Standing Electric Wood Stove Fireplace Heater

HomCom 16 1500W Free Standing Electric Wood Stove Fireplace Heater

This HomCom heater is loaded with safety features, and it's surprisingly realistic in its effects. Its feature set and price may have you asking, "Why shouldn't this HomCom 16" unit be my next electric fireplace? You can take advantage of variable energy controls to limit the wattage used between 750 and 1500 watts. This product is versatile and small enough to move around from room to room.

PRICE

$$

You can snag this fireplace-style heating unit for under $100 on Amazon.

EASE OF USE

This unit turns on and off easily. In our view, a fireplace simulator like this should be a relatively straightforward and simple device, and this one is just that, with controls that simply flip on and off. The controls are located inside a door that flips down beneath the "fire," and the automatic-off timer lets you rest without having to get up and shut the unit off. There's also a heat-sensitive cut-off switch that kills the power should the unit happen to topple.

HEAT OUTPUT & DISTRIBUTION

A realistic 323 square feet is the rating offered here. This heater can definitely hold its own in a medium-sized room. We recommend leaving plenty of empty space around the unit for added safety and heat distribution.

DESIGN QUALITY

You can only see the "fire" from one glass pane in the front, so some may simply see the effect as that of a glorified LED television screen mounted on a space heater. This heater doesn't have the multiple windows around the sides that some competing units do.

RELIABILITY & WARRANTY

Unfortunately, when dealing with these devices, it's very difficult to discern whether they come with a warranty. Check with the manufacturer and your retailer regarding any applicable return policies in effect.

Pros

  • Thermal cutoff switch prevents overheating
  • Unit turns off if it tips over

Cons

  • LED display creates "fire" effect
  • Only one panel for viewing the fire effect
  • Far more costly to operate than central gas heat

Dimplex Mini Cube Electric Stove

Dimplex Mini Cube Electric Stove

This electric stove's 1,370 watts of power will enable you to heat most medium-sized rooms. The embers pulsate, and, interestingly, there's a glossy finish around the outside. Visualize a retro, 1950s TV set with its interior aflame. Fairly simple and straightforward. This flame effect, while simple in design, is actually patented, so much thought went into it. It makes us wonder why the maker did not give more consideration to this unit's case.

The exterior and electronic-looking bottom of the machine detract from the fire effect, but in terms of functionality, this unit does what it promises to do, using that electronic front to push heat into the room. You can run the unit with or without heat.

PRICE

$$

You should expect to pay about $80 for a Dimplex Mini Cube electric stove.

EASE OF USE

The controls are straightforward, and this unit worked just fine for us.

HEAT OUTPUT & DISTRIBUTION

The fan uses 1,370 watts of power to push heat throughout a medium or slightly larger room (maximum size: 400 square feet).

DESIGN QUALITY

The fire effect looks great, and we awarded points for its innovative design placement inside a mini-cube. However, we're just not sold on the idea that a fire ought to be presented inside a slick-looking electronic device. In terms of overall design, we agree that the unique fire effect here is somewhat captivating, but we prefer a more "stove-looking" heater that better "sells" the appearance and comforts of a real flame. This unit measures just 14.5" x 13" x 8", so you can inconspicuously take it anywhere, including that drafty cubicle at work, potentially.

RELIABILITY & WARRANTY

It appears to us that you can exchange this Dimplex heater within 90 days of purchase if needed.

Pros

  • Highly portable
  • Cool to the touch
  • No emissions
  • RV-compatible

Cons

  • Only one viewing window, positioned in front
  • More pricey heating than gas or oil

Conclusion

One of the downsides of using an electric heater is the power consumption for the amount of heat produced. Inevitably, you get more bang for your buck using your home's installed gas-efficient gas heating system or an oil-burning system. Your power bill will go up as a result of running these units for prolonged periods of time. Also, we'll note once more that, with most of these products, warranty information and return options should be verified before you purchase.

In our view, all the electric fireplaces we evaluated are nice, moderately priced novelties that will add both heat and character to your home. For the most part, even though they all have room for improvement regarding selling the appearance of the fire, their combined functionality and visual appeal make them worthy purchases.

Any of the heaters evaluated above will fill a smaller or medium-sized room with ample heat, but none is suited to be your primary source of heat. We determined that the Duraflame DFI-5010-01 infrared quartz fireplace stove seems to win the heat-coverage game, even if it can't really overwhelm a full thousand square feet with heat. We liked the handy little remote with the Comfort Smart Jackson model. Both the HomCom and the Mini Cube are highly portable units and, if aesthetics aren't your top concern, the Dimplex Mini Cube might be the best one to consider.

All in all, If heat is what you're primarily seeking, the Duraflame DFI-5010-01 tops our list. Duraflame is also straightforward about its warranty, which may not be the main reason you typically buy, but it's a reason that might put this over the edge for some buyers.
